We are pleased to report strong progress in the Exmouth Halsdon by-election campaign, with Paula Burtoft’s election address now delivered to households across the ward.
Over the past week, Paula’s Halsdon campaign team has been out in all weathers delivering her leaflet, speaking with residents, and helping ensure every voter has the chance to learn more about Paula’s background, experience, and priorities for Exmouth. Volunteers have taken part in delivery sessions, street conversations, and connect calling, helping to reach as many residents as possible.
This follows the successful delivery of two earlier pieces of literature: Paula’s introductory letter to residents and her letter to postal voters. With less than two weeks to go until polling day, we will continue canvassing across the ward, delivering further literature, and speaking directly with residents about the issues that matter most to them.
Paula’s campaign focuses on a series of clear local priorities, shaped by her lifelong connection to Exmouth and her professional background as a nurse and care home manager. Her key commitments include:
- A strong voice for Exmouth, rooted in decades of local experience and a deep understanding of the town’s needs.
- Protecting health and social care during local government reorganisation, ensuring essential services remain properly prioritised and Exmouth’s voice is not overlooked.
- Tackling anti-social behaviour, working with Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez, David Reed MP, and local councillors to deliver safer streets and more visible policing.
- Responsible housing and infrastructure, supporting new homes only where developments come with the necessary roads, schools, shops, and public transport, and ensuring the Dinan Way link road genuinely reduces congestion.
- Backing local businesses, including supporting Conservative proposals to abolish business rates for retail, hospitality, and leisure to help high streets thrive.
- Protecting access to banking services, particularly for older and less tech-confident residents affected by the closure of local bank branches.
Paula has lived in Exmouth all her life and is committed to standing up for her community. She has worked in local nursing homes, raised her family in the town, and understands first-hand the pressures facing residents, families, and local businesses.
We look forward to continuing the campaign in the days ahead, ensuring voters across Halsdon have every opportunity to meet Paula, learn about her priorities, and share their views on the future of Exmouth.
The Exmouth Halsdon by-election will take place on Thursday 4 December 2025.
